Pub crawls 2015-2016
CUTwC runs a series of pub crawls throughout (mostly) the first two terms
of the academic year, intending to visit every public house in Cambridge
during that time. This is an excellent way to learn you way around Cambridge,
so long as you don't mind asking "what pub's it near?" when being given
directions.
See also the 2014-2015 crawl.
Saturday 18th of June (afternoon): The Grantchester Crawl backwards
6 pubs to visit:
Meeting in the Lord Byron, Trumpington at 2:30pm
Saturday 18th of June: The Grantchester Crawl
3 pubs to visit (plus 4 not in Cambridge):
Likely meeting at The Flying Pig
(106 Hills Road) at 7pm in the absence of a better option. This pub is not officially on this crawl!
Note: The last four pubs are in Grantchester, and outside the city limits of Cambridge. They are therefore not strictly part of the crawl, but we usually visit them by way of celebration.
Directions:
- The Green man is on the east side of Trumpington High Street, which is on the left as you head out of Cambridge.
- Turn left out of the Green Man, south along the High Street. Hudson's Ale House is on the left, a little way down.
- From Hudson's Ale House, cross the High Street and turn right, the head left into Church Lane. The Lord Byron is on the right.
- Prepare for a long walk to celebrate finishing the crawl of genuine Cambridge pubs. Turn right out of the Lord Byron, southwest down Church Lane, then west on Grantchester Road. Stay on Grantchester Road as it winds and turns into Mill Way, then Grantchester High Street. As the road splits, the Green Man is on the right.
- From the Green Man, follow round to the right. The Red Lion is very nearby on the left.
- Turn right out of the Red Lion and return to the High Street, then turn right. Follow the High Street round to the right as it turns north into Broadway. The Rupert Brooke is on the right.
- Turn right out of the Rupert Brooke north along Broadway. The Blue Ball Inn is on the left.
- To head back to town, turn left out of the Blue Ball, north along Broadway. Broadway becomes Grantchester Road; veer right at Selwyn Road and left onto King's Road to cut a corner before hitting Barton Road (this is famously a long walk and typically an opportunity for singing rude songs). Veer right on Barton Road, follow around to the left for Newnham Road, cross the roundabout and turn right at Silver Street to get back to the town centre. Alternatively, it is possible to walk back from Grantchester alongside the river, if one prefers stepping in cow pats and cattle grids in the dark to being run over. There is no obvious curry opportunity, but there's no way go get back in time for one either - the only option is a taxi from the Blue Ball.
Tuesday 10th of May: The Freshers' Crawl (redux)
Note: This crawl was advertised as a re-run of the King Street Crawl, and changed.
Meeting in the Bath Ale House at 7:30pm.
Directions:
- The Bath Ale House is on Bene't Street, near the Eagle, the Pint Shop, and Free School Lane.
- Turn left out of the Bath, pass the Pint Shop (we'll come back) and the Corn Exchange, and turn right onto Corn Exchange Street. At the end, turn left onto Downing Street; Quinn's is on the left.
- Turn left out of Quinn's and continue along Downing Street to the intersection with St Andrew's Street, opposite Emmanuel. Turn right towards Downing, out of town. The Regal is on the right.
- Turn right out of the Regal and cross the road. Continue out of town past the entrance to Downing (and Pizza Hut). The Grain Store is through a gap on the left, between City Kebab and the Cheque Centre.
- Return to Regent Street and turn left to continue out of town. The Prince Regent is on the left before the crossroads.
- Turn left out of the Prince Regent, then left alongside Lloyd's to walk along Gonville Place (beside Parker's Piece). Cross the road at some point, since you will want to turn right down Mill Road at the next crossroads (you can cut the corner in front of the swimming pool). Head down Mill Road, then turn right onto Covent Garden. The Six Bells is on the left, at the corner of Mill Street. (Note: The alternative route behind the University Cricket Club using Gresham Road and Glissom Road is slightly longer unless you can cut across the club somehow...)
- Turn left out of the Six Bells along Covent Garden, away from Mill Road. Turn left up Cross Street. The Live and Let Live is on the right, at the junction with Mawson Road.
- Turn right out of the Live and Let Live, away from Mill Road along Mawson Road. Turn left at Wilkin Street. The Salisbury Arms is on the right at the junction with Tenison Road (although there is an earlier entrance).
- Obvious curry option: Leave the Salisbury and get to Tenison Road (which you may already be on if you chose the right entrance). Head to Mill Road by turning left relative to the exit of Wilkin Street. Once at Mill Road, the Kohinoor is to the left and the Curry Queen is to the right - take your pick.
- To return to town, head down Mill Road to the junction with Gonville Place and take the diagonal across Parker's Piece, then continue right along St Andrew's Street (unless you're going to Downing).
Tuesday 10th of May: The King Street Crawl (redux)
Meeting in the Eagle at 7:30pm.
Directions:
- The Eagle is on the north side of Bene't Street, on the King Street side of the Bath.
- Turn left out of the Eagle, cross to the other side of Bene't Street, and keep walking until the Pint Shop is on your right (vaguely around the time you get to Peas Hill on the left). The Corn Exchange is too far.
- Out of the Pint Shop, head north up Peas Hill to the Market and cross diagonally (as stalls permit). Continue northeast on Market Street and follow round to the left onto Sidney Street, north past the front of Waterstones. Turn right onto the pedestrian Sussex Street, and, at the end, left onto Hobson Street (north). Follow Hobson Street to the right and, when it hits King Street (at Malcolm Street), head straight on, East. But not very far, because the Cambridge Brew House entrnce is on your left.
- Turn left out of the Cambridge Brew House and continue east along King Street. The Champion of the Thames is on the opposite side of the road.
- Turn right out of the Champion of the Thames and continue east along King Street. The King Street Run is on the same side of the road.
- Turn right out of the King Street Run and cross the road. The St Radegund is shortly before the end of King Street.
- Turn left out of the St Radegund and cross the road. Pass Wesley Memorial Church on your right as you go around the south side of the roundabout, pass Short Street, and continue east onto Maids Causeway. Turn right to head south on Fair Street. The entrance to the Hopbine is on your right.
- Turn right out of the Hopbine and return north to Maids Causeway. Turn right to continue east and cross the road. The Burleigh Arms is on your left.
- For curry options, the best bet may be Mill Road (Bengal RIP). Head east to the roundabout with East Road, then cross over and head south until you get to the corner of Gonville Place (you can cut the corner to the left at the gardens). Head southeast along Mill Road, and the Kohinoor is on your right, eventually.
Friday 6th of May: The Castle Hill Crawl (redux)
Meeting in the Sir Isaac Newton at 7:30pm.
8 pubs visited (by Harley Jones, Ed Green, Toby Bruce and Joe Cooper)
Directions:
- The Sir Isaac Newton is on the right hand side of Castle Hill as you head out of town, just south of the junction with Castle Park.
- Turn left out of the Newton and continue southeast down Castle Street. Cross the road; the Architect is on the right (southwest side).
- Turn right out of the Architect and continue southeast, crossing the road again. The Castle Inn is on the northeast side of the road just after the car park for the council offices.
- Cross Castle Street again and head down Whyman's Lane, beside the Architect. Turn left on St Peter's Street, then immediately right onto Pound Hill. Follow the road southeast. The Punter is on the left, on the corner with Northampton Street.
- Head northeast along Northampton Street to the crossroads, crossing the road to the southeast. Head southeast along Magdalene Street. The Pickerel Inn is on the right, opposite Magdalene College.
- Turn right from the Pickerel and cross the road. Continue southeast across Magdelene Bridge. The Baron of Beef is just before Blackamoor Head Yard, on the left.
- Leave the Baron of Beef and head southeast roughly ten feet across Blackamore Head Yard to the Mitre. (Note that, at the time of writing, Google Maps has a funny idea of where the Mitre is - but it's spectacularly hard to get lost between these two pubs given that you can almost touch both of them at once.)
- Turn left out of the Mitre towards town along Bridge Street, and immediately left through a passage between shops. Cross the car park and leave by the car entrance. The Maypole is on the left. Alternatively, if the car park worries you, head out of town along Bridge Street and turn right onto Portugal Place; keep following to the right until you find the Maypole.
- Obvious curry: Head back through the car park. You can enter the Curry King from the passageway you took from Bridge Street (unless you didn't). Head back to Bridge Street and turn left to return to the town centre.
Tuesday 8th of March: The Cherry Hinton crawl
Meeting at the Red Lion at 7:30pm.
7 pubs to visit
Directions:
- The Red Lion is on Mill End Road in Cherry Hinton, behind the Rhode Island from Cherry Hinton High STreet.
- Leave the Red Lion and head to southeast to the roundabout with Cherry Hinton High Street. Head south (straight ahead, south) and follow the High Street round to the right, crossing the road. The Robin Hood is on the left (east) side of the road, before the crossroads with Cherry Hinton Road, Fulbourn Road and Queen Edith's Way.
- Leave the Robin Hood and cross the crossroads to the east. Follow Queen Edith's Way southeast, for some time. Turn right (north) onto Wolfstan Way. The Queen Edith is on the right, set back from the road. Note that it has been rebuilt since the photos were taken.
- Turn right out of the Queen Edith and continue north along Wolfstan Way for some time until the end. Turn left onto Cherry Hinton Road, then right at the roundabout to head north on Perne Road, crossing to the west side. The Med is on the left.
- Turn right to head back south to the junction with Cherry Hinton Road, then turn right to head west, crossing the road. The Rock is on the left, just before Blinco Grove.
- Turn left out of the Rock and head west along Cherry Hinton Road, crossing over. Turn right (eventually) at the end of Cherry Hinton Road to head north on Hills Road. Cross the railway bridge; the Earl of Derby is on the right shortly before the traffic lights with Brooklands Road.
- Turn right out of the Earl of Derby and continue north/northwest along Hills Road, crossing the road. The Flying Pig is on the left, within sight of the junction with Station Road.
- To return to town, turn left out of the Flying Pig and continue north/northwest along Hills Road, which will take you to Regent Street and Gonville Place. The Saffron Brasserie is on the left on your way, if you feel the need for curry.
Tuesday 1st of March: The Newmarket Road crawl
Meeting at the Green Dragon at 7:30pm.
7 pubs to visit
Directions:
- The Green Dragon is in Chesterton, on Water Street, near the pedestrian bridge over the Cam.
- Turn right out of the Green Dragon and follow Water Street southwest, then as it turns north onto Ferry Lane. Turn left at the end of Ferry Lany onto the High Street; follow this as is S-bends to the west. The Haymakers is on the left opposite Union Lane.
- Turn right (northeast) out of the Haymakers to retrace your steps, then turn immediately right to head south onto Chapel Street. At the end, turn left onto St Andrew's Street, heading southeast. As St Andrew's Street veers south, take a left through the car park onto the pedestrian Riverside Bridge (just after Ransome Close). Continue south down the bridge after it crosses the Cam onto Riverside, then take the first left (before Riverside Place) to head east and slightly south on the north side of Tesco's. Continue southeast onto Cheddar Lane, turning left at the entrance road to the Tesco car park, then right at the junction with Newmarket Road. The Wrestlers is on the right, on the northwest side of Newmarket Road.
- Head right out of the Wrestlers, heading southwest along the northwest side of Newmarket Road. The Corner House is on the right at the junction with River Lane.
- Head out of the Corner House and cross Newmarket Road, continuing east. Head south at the lights onto Coldham's Lane. Turn right to head west on New Street, continuing on New Street (not veering right onto Harvest Way!) to the second mini roundabout, at which turn left (south) onto Sturton Street. The Dobblers is on the left, just after Abbey Walk and opposite Vicarage Terrace. (You can cut a corner by heading south at the first mini roundabout onto York Street, then heading diagonally across St Matthew's Piece.)
- Continue south on Sturton Street and turn left to head east on Sleaford Street. The Geldart is on the right, by the crossroads with York Street and Ainsworth Street.
- From the Geldart, return east along Sleaford Street. At the junction with Sturton Street, turn right to head north, then immediately left onto Milford Street. The Alexandra Arms is on the left, at the corner with Gwydir Street.
- From the Alex, turn left to head south along Gwydir Street. Mill Road is at the end; turn right to head into town, with the Kohinoor as a curry option; alternatively, veer left at Mill Road to find the Curry Queen on the far side of the road.
Tuesday 16th of February: The Victoria Road Crawl
Meeting at the Traveller's Rest at 7pm (or the Grapes at 7:45pm).
8 pubs, or 7 and a smoking wreck, to visit.
Directions:
- The Traveller's Rest (which has historically been included, but whose staff currently describe it as "to be honest, a bar on the hotel, but a pub crawl would be cool") is on Huntingdon Road very close to the official city limits and not far from Girton College and opposite Whitehouse Lane. It is now part of a Premier Inn.
- Turn right out of the Traveller's Rest and head southeast along Huntington Road. Continue (a long way) to the traffic lights with Victoria Road. Veer left and left again onto Histon Road. The Grapes is on the left (west) side of Histon Road, near the junction with Victoria Road.
- Turn right out of the Grapes, cross Histon Road to the east side, and follow the road round to the left at the traffic lights onto Victoria Road, heading north east. The Carpenters Arms is on the left just after French's Road and the cemetery.
- Turn left out of the Carpenters Arms and continue along Victoria Road. Once at Mitcham's Corner, the Portland Arms is on the left of the gyratory before Milton Road splits off it.
- Cross the road out of the Portland Arms and veer right onto Chesterton Road. The Boathouse is near where Chesterton Road splits onto the gyratory.
- Turn right out of the Boathouse, and the Tivoli is next door, unless it hasn't recovered from the recent fire.
- Turn right out of the Tivoli and continue north east along Chesterton Road. The Waterman (which used to be jolly) is on the right just before the junction with Victoria Avenue.
- Out of the Waterman, continue across Victoria Avenue along Chesterton Road. The Old Spring is visible on the right just before Ferry Path.
- There's no convenient curry near here. One option is to follow Chesterton Road to the crossroads with Bridge Street, turn left, and then left again between the Mitre and the Baron of Beef to get to the Curry King. Or you could turn right up Castle Street to get to the Maharajah.
Tuesday 9th of February: The Yon Mill Road Crawl
Meeting at the Brook at 7:30pm.
8 pubs to visit
Directions:
- The Brook is on the south west corner of the junction between Brookfields Avenue (the continuation of Mill Road) and Perne Road.
- Turn left (west) out of the Brook and continue onto Mill Road. The Royal Standard (welcome back!) is on the south (left) side of Mill Road, after Cyprus Road.
- Cross Mill Road from the Royal Standard and continue north along Belgrave Road. Take the first left onto St Philips Road. Continue west to the junction with Thoday Street; The Empress is on the near right side of the crossroads.
- Leaving the Empress, head south down Thoday Street to Mill Road, then turn right, past the shops. The Earl of Beaconsfield is on the right just before Great Eastern Street, just before the bridge over the railway.
- Turn right out of the Earl of Beaconsfield and cross the railway bridge, and also Mill Road. Devonshire Road is the first road on the left (south) of Mill Road after the bridge. The Devonshire Arms is on the right.
- Turn left out of the Devonshire Arms and return north to Mill Road. The White Swan is opposite, on the left of the junction with Kingston Street.
- Turn left out of the White Swan and continue north along Kingston Street. The Kingston Arms is on the left.
- Turn left ouf of the Kingston Arms to continue north along Kingston Street. Turn left at the end, onto Hooper Street, then turn right onto Gwydir Street. The Cambridge Blue is on the left as you head north.
- Turn right out of the Cambridge Blue to return south to Mill Road. From here, turning right will take you back to town (likely by crossing Parker's Piece diagonally, say hello to the Reality Checkpoint). It will also take you past the Kohinoor, on the opposite side of Mill Road. If you prefer a different curry, turning left at the junction between Gwydir Street and Mill Road will offer you the Curry Queen, also on the far side of Mill Road.
Monday 23rd of November: The Prospect Row Crawl
Meeting at the Clarendon Arms at 7:30pm.
7 pubs plus somewhere else that serves beer to visit
Directions:
- The Clarendon Arms is on Clarendon Street. which is the continuation of Park Terrace, the road which runs along the northwest edge of Parker's Piece, where Park Terrace crosses Parkside. You could also head to Emmanuel Street (the southeast side of Christ's Pieces, near the Drummer Street bus station), take the southmost path off it (Victoria Road), and turn left at the end onto Clarendon Street. The Clarendon Arms is on the left.
- Turn left (northeast) out of the Clarendon Arms and north along Clarendon Street. Take the next right (east) onto the pedestrian road opposite Orchard Street; the Elm Tree is at the end on the left, at the junction with Eden Street. (Note: Left, not right. Google Maps has historically picked a number of locations for the Elm Tree that aren't correct.) If this path looks scary, you can also turn right down Elm Street and turn right at the end.
- From the Elm Tree, walk straight out of the entrance, south along Eden Street and you'll be facing the Cricketers. As the road turns left to Prospect Row, there is a pedestrianised path (Melbourn Place) heading south on your right. Head down it and the entrance to the Cricketers is on your left.
- Turn right out of the Cricketers and return north to Prospect Row. Turn right to head (east-south-)east. The Free Press is on the left.
- Turn left out of the Free Press to continue along Prospect Row. At the end, turn left to head northeast on Adam and Eve street. Turn right to head east on Dover Street, off which you should turn left (north) to find the entrance to the Tram Depot. A moment's silence for the livers of all the freshers who have finished their first crawl here would be appropriate.
- From the Tram Depot, head back to Dover Street, then turn left to get to East Road, at which you should head left (northeast) towards the Grafton Centre. The Duke of Cambridge, previously the Baker's Yard, is on the left.
- From the Duke of Cambridge, turn left and continue north east along East Road. Just after the road bifurcates to become dual carriageway, Burleigh Street (not, obviously, where the Burleigh Arms is) is on the left. The Snug, formerly the Vine, is on the north corner of the junction with East Road. We have reason to believe this might not be a pub, but could serve you beer anyway.
- Leave the Snug and cross the two halves of East Road heading southeast onto Norfolk Street. Keep heading east to the junction with Staffordshire Street on your left. The Blue Moon is on the northeast corner of this junction. The direct route back into town from here is back to East Road, then south to the corner of Parker's Piece.
- Obvious curry, such that it is, involves Mill Road. Leaving the Blue Moon, continue east along Norfolk Street. At the end, turn right onto Gwydir Street, ignoring the temptations of the Alexandra Arms and the Cambridge Blue. Keep heading south until you reach Mill Road. Crossing to the south side of Mill Road, turn left (east, out of town) for the Curry Queen, or right (west, into town) for the Kohinoor. To get back to town, head west along Mill Road until you get to the swimming pool at Parker's Piece, then cross the diagonal past the Reality Checkpoint to reach Regent Street.
Tuesday 10th of November: The King Street Crawl, indecisive Crawl Czar edition
Meeting at the Eagle at 7:30pm.
8 pubs visited
Tuesday 10th of November: The King Street Crawl
Meeting at the Burleigh Arms at 7:30pm.
8 pubs to visit
Directions:
- The Burleigh Arms is on the north side of the west part of Newmarket Road, near where Newmarket Road continues to Maids Causeway and north of the Grafton Centre. It is opposite Christchurch Street. There are worse ways to get there from the town centre than to run this crawl backwards (skipping the Hopbine). Heading north along East Road and left at the roundabout onto Newmarket Road will also work, depending on where you start.
- Turn right (west) and cross Maids Causeway. Turn left (south) onto Fair Street. The Hopbine is on the left.
- Turn right (north) out of the Hopbine and return to Maids Causeway, then turn left (west). Continue to the roundabout, passing Wesley Methodist Church and taking the second exit. The Radegund is on the north west side of King Street.
- Turn right out of the St Radegund, west along King Street. The King Street Run is on the left (south) side of King Street.
- Turn left out of the King Street Run, continuing west along King Street. The Champion of the Thames is on the left.
- Turn left out of the Champion of the Thames and cross King Street, continuing west. The Cambridge Brew House is on the right, just before Malcolm Street.
- Turn right out of the Cambridge Brew House and continue along King Street past the junction with Malcolm Street. Follow King Street round the left corner to Hobson Street, then take the pedestrian Sussex Street on the right to continue south west. Turn left (south) onto Sidney Street at the end. Turn right to head west on Market Street, and at Market Hill head diagonally across the market (or turn left on the second part of Market Hill if you can't find your way through the stalls). Continue south onto Peas Hill past the Arts Theatre. At the T-junction with Wheeler Street, turn slightly left, and the Pint Shop is on the opposite (south) side of the road between Syrens and Barclays Bank (and much easier to find now the scaffolding is down).
- From the Pint Shop, turn left (west) onto Bene't Street. The Eagle is on the right (north) side, after the Bath.
- You're already in the town centre, so I'm going not going to give directions back. For a curry, don't start from here (but heading past Great St Mary's up Trinity Street, left at the end onto Bridge Street, and going through the passage between the Mitre and Baron of Beef to get to the Curry King is a viable option). Alternatively, head back to Market Street on the north side of the Market, and visit the Van of Life for a burger, or head down Rose Crescent to visit The Gardenia. If you've not visited one of these before, you're not a Cambridge student.
Thursday 5th of November: The Arbury Crawl
Meeting in the Fort St George, leaving when the fireworks end.
6 pubs visited
Directions:
Please note: Arbury has historically been home to a disproportionate amount of anti-university feeling. While this is not as pervasive as was once the case, it is best not to aggravate matters: please go out of your way to be on your best behaviour, and it may help not to be too obviously-connected with the university (e.g. avoid wearing college scarves or Quarter Blues).
- Make your way to the Fort St George. This is on the river at the corner of Midsummer Common near Victoria Avenue, by the pedestrian bridge which links to Pretoria Road, and at the junction of several paved paths across Midsummer Common. It is traditional to do this crawl on November 5th, which provides the opportunity to watch the fireworks on Midsummer Common. In this case, it is a good idea to get beer at the Fort St George early - there is likely to be a long queue - and be near the pedestrian bridge when the fireworks finish, so as to beat the rush.
- Turn left (southeast) out of the pub, away from Victoria Avenue, and cross the Cam at the pedestrian bridge. Walk up Pretoria Road, turn left at the end onto Hamilton Road, and follow it round towards Chesterton Road. The Old Spring is on the left. After fireworks, this will be heaving, so don't go in.
- Turn northeast along Chesterton Road (away from the Mitcham's Corner one-way system), cross Chesterton Road at the pedestrian crossing and turn left down George Street. Continue to the T-junction with Milton Road (a main road) and turn right. Cross Milton Road and follow it northeast, crossing the roundabout junction with Elizabeth Way. Continue past the traffic lights at Arbury Road, and the Milton Arms is on the left (northwast) side of Milton Road.
- Turn left out of the Milton Arms and continue northeast down Milton Road. Continue to the major crossroads with King's Hedges Road. The Golden Hind is opposite, on the north corner of the crossroads.
- Turn right out of the Golden Hind, up King's Hedges Road, and cross over. Turn left (southwest) onto Campkin Road, following it round the bend as it turns northwest. The Jenny Wren is on the right (northeast), just before the junction with St Kilda Road.
- Turn right out of the Jenny Wren, down Campkin Road. You then have two choices:
- The simpler route is to continue down Campkin Road and turn right at the second mini-roundabout, up Northfields Avenue. Stay on Northfields Avenue as it veers northeast. Just after the roundabout with Cameron Road, the Ship is on the right, with the entrance near Northfields Avenue.
- The shorter route is to turn right off Campkin Road up the pedestrian route from the car park near St Kilda Avenue. Follow the path as directly northwest as possible, keeping buildings to the left (and mostly open ground to the right). When there are trees instead of buildings to the left, follow the path through them to the left (west, then southwest) and continue where the path rejoins the road (Cameron Road). Continue southwest down Cameron Road; The Ship is on the right, near the roundabout junction with Northfields Avenue; you will probably have to walk to the northwest edge of the building to find an entrance. If looking at this on an on-line map, it's worth using a satellite view, because the pedestrian route is separate from roads.
- From The Ship, turn left (southwest) down Northfields Avenue past the roundabout with Cameron Road, then veer right at the next roundabout onto Roxburgh Road. Turn immediately left (souwthwest) into another part of Roxburgh Road and continue southwest to the end, where it becomes Hanson Court. A footpath will take you to the Nicholson Way, which you should cross over to reach the (parallel) Arbury Road. Cross Arbury Road and turn right (northwest), then take the next left onto Mere Way at the roundabout. Continue southwest along Mere Way, over a roundabout, as it turns into Carlton Road. The Carlton Arms is some way down, on the right (northwest) side after Perse Way (on the right) and Metcalfe Road (on the left). If you reach Gilbert Road, you've gone too far.
- To get back to the centre of town, turn right from the Carlton Arms and walk to the crossroads with Gilbert Road. Turn left, southeast, down Gilbert Road, then right at the bottom, which will turn you southwest along Milton Road. Walk to Mitcham's Corner and cross southwards to Victoria Avenue (the main road across the river). Walk down Victoria Avenue, then take the second, third or fourth exit from the roundabout to get to Short Street (for Emmanuel etc.), King Street (past the St Radegund, for Christ's, King's, etc.) or Jesus Lane (Jesus). If heading to the north of town (Murray Edwards, Fitz, Churchill, etc.) you may prefer to turn right at the crossroads between Carlton Way and Gilbert Road, then left onto Histon Road, which will take you to the Histon Road/Huntingdon Road/Castle Street/Victoria Road junction. One can cut a corner by continuing from Carlton Way to Stretten Avenue instead of turning at Gilbert Road, then veering left at Harvey Goodwin Avenue and then right at Victoria Road, but this is a less main road route if navigating alone. There is no curry opportunity obviously close to the Carlton Arms - the Maharajah on Castle Hill or the Curry King at Jordans Yard near Bridge Street (between the Mitre and the Baron of Beef) may be the nearest options.
Monday 26th of October: The Castle Hill Crawl
Meeting in the Sir Isaac Newton at 7:30pm.
8 pubs visited

- The Granta
(14 Newnham Terrace, near where Newnham Road runs alongside water)
- The Anchor

(43 Panton Street, by Coronation Street)
- The Alma Brewery
(26 Russell Court)
The Great Northern (1-3 Station Road, at the junction with Hills Road) - The Great Northern was closed, as usual
The Emperor
(21 Hills Road, junction with St Paul's Road, opposite the Saffron Brasserie) - The Emperor was closed, apparently for refurbishment
Directions:
- The Red Bull is on Barton Road, by St Mark's Church
- Turn right out of the Red Bull and follow Barton Road round to the left at the lights. Cross the roundabout (first exit) onto Newnham Road. The Granta is on the right.
- Turn right out of the Granta; turn right at the junction with Silver Street. The Anchor is just across the Silver Street Bridge on the right.
- Turn right out of the Anchor and right again behind it onto Laundress Lane. The Mill is opposite the end.
- Turn right out of the Mill (from the entrance you entered by), down Mill Lane. Turn right onto Trumpington Street, and eventually left at the mini roundabout onto Lensfield Road. (Alternatively, if you have access to the back passage of Peterhouse, take the exit from the Mill that you didn't come in through, turn left alongside the Cam, pass the Grad Pad, and use whatever secrets are necessary to duck through Peterhouse, which is a Short Cut. When you get to the front of Peterhouse, you will be on Trumpington Street, at which point you should turn right and resume hunting for a mini roundabout at which to turn left.) Pass the Snug, which we believe is no longer a pub, and turn right onto Panton Street. The Panton Arms is on the left.
- Turn left out of the Panton Arms and left again onto Russell Court. The Alma is on the right.
- Turn right out of the Alma, follow Russell Court to the right, then turn left onto Norwich Street. Continue to Hill Street. Turn right and cross the road, and follow the road to the left at the lights with Station Road. The Great Northern, which has a poor history of being open, is on the left.
- Turn right out of the Great Northern and right again back down Hills Road, passing Norwich Street. The Emperor is on the right.
- Obvious curry option: The Saffron Brasserie is to the northwest of the Emperor, on the opposite side of Hills Road from the Empress as you turn right out of the Empress and head back into town.
Thursday 8th of October: The Freshers' Crawl
7 pubs visited and one no longer a pub.
