Pub crawls 2014-2015
CUTwC runs a series of pub crawls throughout (mostly) the first two terms
of the academic year, intending to visit every public house in Cambridge
during that time. This is an excellent way to learn you way around Cambridge,
so long as you don't mind asking "what pub's it near?" when being given
directions.
See also the 2013-2014 crawl.
Sunday 21st of June: The Grantchester Crawl
Meeting at the Green Man from 3pm, with an optional Queen Edith entry qualification.
3 pubs to visit (plus 4 not in Cambridge):
Note: The last four pubs are in Grantchester, and outside the city limits of Cambridge. They are therefore not strictly part of the crawl, but we usually visit them by way of celebration.
Directions:
- The Green man is on the east side of Trumpington High Street, which is on the left as you head out of Cambridge.
- Turn left out of the Green Man, south along the High Street. The Tally Ho is on the left, a little way down.
- From the Tally Ho, cross the High Street and turn right, the head left into Church Lane. The Lord Byron is on the right.
- Prepare for a long walk to celebrate finishing the crawl of genuine Cambridge pubs. Turn right out of the Lord Byron, southwest down Church Lane, then west on Grantchester Road. Stay on Grantchester Road as it winds and turns into Mill Way, then Grantchester High Street. As the road splits, the Green Man is on the right.
- From the Green Man, follow round to the right. The Red Lion is very nearby on the left.
- Turn right out of the Red Lion and return to the High Street, then turn right. Follow the High Street round to the right as it turns north into Broadway. The Rupert Brooke is on the right.
- Turn right out of the Rupert Brooke north along Broadway. The Blue Ball Inn is on the left.
- To head back to town, turn left out of the Blue Ball, north along Broadway. Broadway becomes Grantchester Road; veer right at Selwyn Road and left onto King's Road to cut a corner before hitting Barton Road (this is famously a long walk and typically an opportunity for singing rude songs). Veer right on Barton Road, follow around to the left for Newnham Road, cross the roundabout and turn right at Silver Street to get back to the town centre. Alternatively, it is possible to walk back from Grantchester alongside the river, if one prefers stepping in cow pats and cattle grids in the dark to being run over. There is no obvious curry opportunity, but there's no way go get back in time for one either - the only option is a taxi from the Blue Ball.

The obvious curry is the Curry Queen, which is on Mill Road roughly opposite Kingston Road,
Saturday 28th of February: The Castle Hill Crawl

8 (or 9 if starting at the Traveller's Rest) pubs to visit:
Directions:
- The Traveller's Rest (which has historically been included, but whose staff currently describe it as "to be honest, a bar on the hotel, but a pub crawl would be cool") is on Huntingdon Road very close to the official city limits and not far from Girton College and opposite Whitehouse Lane. It is now part of a Premier Inn.

Turn left onto Jesus Lane, following the road down to the traffic lights with Park Street, where you should turn right. Pass the ADC, continue past the Park Street car park. The Maypole is on the left, just after the car park.
- To get back to town, turn right out of the Maypole and right again up Round Church Street, after the car park - this will take you to Bridge Street and the junction with St John's Street. The obvious curry opportunity is to turn right up Bridge Street and head to the Curry King, in the passageway between the Mitre and the Baron of Beef.
Saturday 31st of January: The East Road Crawl
87 pubs to visit:
The Corner House was charging for entry, so members actually visited between 4 and 6 pubs.
Saturday 20th of December: The Hot Green Beany
Meeting at the Granta at 7pm (because the Red Bull has defied tradition and removed its trivia machine)
Note: This crawl does not count towards the official crawl list. It is a traditional seasonal crawl of
trivia machines, finishing in a curry house - likely the Curry King - and with a chicken jalfrezi
("what are all these hot green beany things?"). It is fairly traditional for most people to ignore
tradition and not actually have a jalfrezi. Winnings traditionally go towards the curry fund.
Traditionally (but a tradition that is occasionally broken) there are no winnings.
5 pubs to visit:
Directions (please ignore the Red Bull):
- The Granta is on Newnham Road (between Silver Street/Sidgewick Avenue and The Fen Causeway, adjacent to Darwin College), backing onto the Mill Pond. The trivia machine is by the door, backing onto the bar.
- Turn right out of the Granta and walk to Silver Street; turn right, then veer left onto Queens' Lane and take the passageway between King's and Cat's. Turn left onto Trumpington Street, then immediately right onto Bene't Street. The Bath is on the left at the Peas Hill end. The trivia machine is in the far left corner.
- Turn left out of the Bath, then pass Great St Mary's and join Trinity Street (via Rose Crescent or directly - it makes little difference). Continue north to Bridge Street, veering left. The Mitre is on the far side of the road. The trivia machine is near the rear door on the far side of the bar from the main entrance, unless it's very near the front (both locations recently used).
- Take the back exit out of the Mitre and enter the Baron of Beef. The trivia machine, if present, is near the rear door.
- Turn right out of the main entrance to the Baron and cross the road. The Pickerel is on the left after the bridge, opposite Magdalene. The trivia machine is straight ahead as you enter the door, out of sight of the bar.

- Leaving the White Swan, cross Mill Road into Devonshire Road. The Deconshire Arms is on the right.
- Leaving the Devonshire Arms, turn left and return to Mill Road. Turn left (northwest) towards town on Mill Road. Take the second left onto Tenison Road. The Salisbury Arms is on the right, just after Wilkin Street. (Alternatively, follow Devonshire Road and loop back to the right on reaching Tenison Road.)
- Turn left out of the Salisbury, north west onto Wilkin Street. Turn right onto Mawson Road at the end. The Live and Let Live is on the left (north west) side of the road, at the junction with Cross Street.
- From the Live and Let Live, turn left (northwest) along Cross Street. Turn right at the end onto Covent Garden. The Six Bells is on the right, at the junction with Mill Street (not Mill Road!)
- To get back to the town centre, leave the Six Bells and turn northeast down Covent Garden to the junction with Mill Road. Turn left onto Mill Road, and continue to the traffic lights with Gonville Place; cross the road and walk diagonally across Parker's Piece, then turn right at the end onto St Andrew's Street to get to the centre of town. The obvious curry opportunity is the Kohinoor, which is a short walk by turning right (southeast) along Mill Road, or the Curry Queen, which is slightly farther in the same direction, opposite the White Swan.
Saturday 22nd of November: The Cherry Hinton Crawl
Meeting at the Great Northern at 7:30pm.
Attendees: Daniel, Rupert, Stew, Andrew (not the Pig), Anthony (The Red Lion only)
The Great Northern was closed for a private party
The Med was hosting a ticketed event, and was full
The Rhode Island appeared to be open, but had closed when we visited it
8 pubs (-ish) to visit, 5 attended:
Directions:
- The Great Northern is on the junction between Station Road and Hills Road, on the north side of the junction..
- Leave the Great Northern and head south, out of town down Hills Road. Cross the road, and the Flying Pig is on the west side of Hills Road within sight of the Station Road junction.
- Turn right out of the Flying Pig, continuing south along Hills Road, and cross the road. The Earl of Derby is just after Brooklands Avenue on the east (left) side of the road.
- Turn left out of the Earl of Derby and continue south along Hills Road. After the railway bridge, turn left onto Cherry Hinton Road. The Rock is some way down on the right, just after Blinco Grove.
- Turn right out of the Rock and continue east along Cherry Hinton Road. Turn left at the roundabout with the ring road by Budgens (not quite as shown on the map), north onto Perne Road. The Med is on the left (west) side.
- Turn right out of the Med and return south along Perne Road to the roundabout. Turn left (east) along Cherry Hinton Road and continue to the crossroads with Cherry Hinton High Street. The Robin Hood is on the opposite side of Cherry Hinton Road, on the north east corner of the junction.
- Turn right out of the Robin Hood and head north east along Cherry Hinton High Street. Follow the road north to the mini roundabout, then veer left onto Mill End Road. The Red Lion is on the right.
- Turn left out of the Red Lion, returning along Mill End Road towards the mini roundabout. The Rhode Island is between Mill End Road and the High Street.
- To return to town, retrace your steps, or order a taxi.
Saturday 15th of November: The Chesterton Crawl
Meeting at the Carpenters Arms at 7:30pm.
Attendees: Harley, Stew, Rupert, Anthony, Daniel, Nick and (from the Tivoli) Joe
8 pubs visited:
Directions:
- The Carpenters Arms is on the north side of Victoria Road, on the junction with French's Road, next to Histon Road Cemetary.
- Turn left out of the Carpenters Arms, heading east along Victoria Road until you get to Mitcham's Corner. Veer right around the one way system when you reach it, heading south towards the river. The Boathouse is on Mitcham's Corner, by the junction with Croft Holme Lane, backing onto the river.
- Turn right out of the Boathouse, east along Chesterton Road. The Tivoli is next to the Bouthouse, on the right.
- Turn right out of the Tivoli, continue east along Chesterton Road, and cross diagonally to the North past Lloyd's Bank to the Portland Arms.
- Cross back south and continue east along Chesterton Road to the junction with Victoria Avenue. The Waterman is on the corner, on the right.
- Leaving the Waterman, continue east along Chesterton Road. The Old Spring is on the right just before Hamilton Road.
- Turn right out of the Old Spring and continue along Chesterton Road to the east. Veer right before the roundabout and cross Elizabeth Way just south of the roundabout. Continue through the pedestrian section onto the last of Chesterton Road, then continue onto Chesterton High Street. The Haymakers is on the right.
- Turn right out of the Haymakers, follow the High Street to the mini-roundabout with Water Lane, where you should turn right. Turn right where Water Lane meets Water Street to head towards the Green Dragon. The Green Dragon is on the left, opposite the pedestrian bridge over the river.
- The obvious route back to town involves turning right down Water Street out of the Green Dragon and crossing the river via the pedestrian bridge. Continue to Garlic Row, then turn right onto Newmarket Road. There used to be a helpful curry house here; alas, no more, which means that turning right (southwest) along Newmarket Road and heading back to town is the only option. Cross the underpass and continue to Maids Causeway. Turn left at Fair Street and veer right onto New Square to get to Emmanuel Road (veer left for the town centre), or continue to Jesus Terrace, Clarendon Street and Park Terrace for the southern part of town. Curry is harder - one option is to turn down East Road at the roundabout, continue alongside Parkside and turn right at Regent Street for the Gandhi. The other is to turn left off Newmarket Road at the lights onto Coldham's Lane, then right onto New Street, left at Sturton Street, right at the end (Hooper Street) then immediately left onto Kingston Street, then at the junction with Mill Road turn right and visit either the Curry Queen or (farther down) the Kohinoor; in this case, continue down Mill Road to get to the centre of town - cross Parker's Piece diagonally and turn right onto St Andrew's Street.
Wednesday 5th of November: Arbury
Meeting at the Fort St George from 7pm, ready to depart as soon as the fireworks end.
6 pubs visited:
Directions:
Please note: Arbury has historically been home to a disproportionate amount of anti-university feeling. While this is not as pervasive as was once the case, it is best not to aggravate matters: please go out of your way to be on your best behaviour, and it may help not to be too obviously-connected with the university (e.g. avoid wearing college scarves or Quarter Blues).
- Make your way to the Fort St George. This is on the river at the corner of Midsummer Common near Victoria Avenue, by the pedestrian bridge which links to Pretoria Road, and at the junction of several paved paths across Midsummer Common. It is traditional to do this crawl on November 5th, which provides the opportunity to watch the fireworks on Midsummer Common. In this case, it is a good idea to get beer at the Fort St George early - there is likely to be a long queue - and be near the pedestrian bridge when the fireworks finish, so as to beat the rush.
- Turn left (southeast) out of the pub, away from Victoria Avenue, and cross the Cam at the pedestrian bridge. Walk up Pretoria Road, turn left at the end onto Hamilton Road, and follow it round towards Chesterton Road. The Old Spring is on the left. After fireworks, this will be heaving, so don't go in.
- Turn northeast along Chesterton Road (away from the Mitcham's Corner one-way system), cross Chesterton Road at the pedestrian crossing and turn left down George Street. Continue to the T-junction with Milton Road (a main road) and turn right. Cross Milton Road and follow it northeast, crossing the roundabout junction with Elizabeth Way. Continue past the traffic lights at Arbury Road, and the Milton Arms is on the left (northwast) side of Milton Road.
- Turn left out of the Milton Arms and continue northeast down Milton Road. Continue to the major crossroads with King's Hedges Road. The Golden Hind is opposite, on the north corner of the crossroads.
- Turn right out of the Golden Hind, up King's Hedges Road, and cross over. Turn left (southwest) onto Campkin Road, following it round the bend as it turns northwest. The Jenny Wren is on the right (northeast), just before the junction with St Kilda Road.
- Turn right out of the Jenny Wren, down Campkin Road. You then have two choices:
- The simpler route is to continue down Campkin Road and turn right at the second mini-roundabout, up Northfields Avenue. Stay on Northfields Avenue as it veers northeast. Just after the roundabout with Cameron Road, the Ship is on the right, with the entrance near Northfields Avenue.
- The shorter route is to turn right off Campkin Road up the pedestrian route from the car park near St Kilda Avenue. Follow the path as directly northwest as possible, keeping buildings to the left (and mostly open ground to the right). When there are trees instead of buildings to the left, follow the path through them to the left (west, then southwest) and continue where the path rejoins the road (Cameron Road). Continue southwest down Cameron Road; The Ship is on the right, near the roundabout junction with Northfields Avenue; you will probably have to walk to the northwest edge of the building to find an entrance. If looking at this on an on-line map, it's worth using a satellite view, because the pedestrian route is separate from roads. It is inadvisable to take this route except in a group, especially after dark - it is poorly-lit and hidden from the road, and Arbury has traditionally contained a population with some anti-university feeling, so it is unwise for lone students to expose themselves to danger. It is also easy to get lost in this back route. If not in a group, the Northfields Avenue route is safer.
- From The Ship, turn left (southwest) down Northfields Avenue past the roundabout with Cameron Road, then veer right at the next roundabout onto Roxburgh Road. Turn immediately left (souwthwest) into another part of Roxburgh Road and continue southwest to the end, where it becomes Hanson Court. A footpath will take you to the Nicholson Way, which you should cross over to reach the (parallel) Arbury Road. Cross Arbury Road and turn right (northwest), then take the next left onto Mere Way at the roundabout. Continue southwest along Mere Way, over a roundabout, as it turns into Carlton Road. The Carlton Arms is some way down, on the right (northwest) side after Perse Way (on the right) and Metcalfe Road (on the left). If you reach Gilbert Road, you've gone too far.
- To get back to the centre of town, turn right from the Carlton Arms and walk to the crossroads with Gilbert Road. Turn left, southeast, down Gilbert Road, then right at the bottom, which will turn you southwest along Milton Road. Walk to Mitcham's Corner and cross southwards to Victoria Avenue (the main road across the river). Walk down Victoria Avenue, then take the second, third or fourth exit from the roundabout to get to Short Street (for Emmanuel etc.), King Street (past the St Radegund, for Christ's, King's, etc.) or Jesus Lane (Jesus). If heading to the north of town (Murray Edwards, Fitz, Churchill, etc.) you may prefer to turn right at the crossroads between Carlton Way and Gilbert Road, then left onto Histon Road, which will take you to the Histon Road/Huntingdon Road/Castle Street/Victoria Road junction. One can cut a corner by continuing from Carlton Way to Stretten Avenue instead of turning at Gilbert Road, then veering left at Harvey Goodwin Avenue and then right at Victoria Road, but this is a less main road route if navigating alone. There is no curry opportunity obviously close to the Carlton Arms - the Maharajah on Castle Hill or the Curry King at Jordans Yard near Bridge Street (between the Mitre and the Baron of Beef) may be the nearest options.

- Head diagonally right out of the Elm Tree down Prospect Row (a road navigable by cars), across the side of the Cricketers (not back down Melbourne Place). The Free Press is on the left (north-east) side of the road.
- To get back to the centre of town, turn right out of the Free Press, turn left at the Cricketers, cross the road and head straight along Park Terrace. Turn right onto St Andrew's Street (unless you live in Downing, in which case turn left), and you'll be in the centre of town.
